  1. This books seems like an interesting look at women and poverty.

This seems to be a major theme for our course, and appears to be strongly connected with issues of health and education development.

One of the reasons for this is the simple preference differences between men and women in how the spend the household's very limited income. Empirically, women are more willing to forgo purchases of consumer goods for higher expenditure levels on medicine, better food, and more time in education.

Another reason for promoting female development in developing nations that the book alludes to, is what seems like a competitive advantage that women have in developing social support systems and health support networks like building hospitals or birth support networks.

This is a link to BBC article about climate change and its effects on women. It is just a short article that a friend sent me that pertains both to the gender equality issues that have been a central theme throughout the duration of our class and the climate and agricultural issues we have been discussing more recently.

I would not have thought about climate change affecting different parts of the poor population differently (especially not in a gender-specific manner). However, the article claims that because women tend to do most of the agricultural work, natural disasters and climate changes will disproportionately affect women. Conversely, decreasing population growth would decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, fertility rates are tied to climate change.

I just thought this was interesting and pertinent.
